Pain Management

What is pain management?

Pain management physicians provide high level care for patients experiencing issues with acute or chronic pain and coordinate a multidisciplinary approach towards treating or managing long-term pain. If you are missing out on things you used to love because of pain, there is something you can do. Pain management can help you re-engage with your life and rediscover your passions and most importantly, provide long-term pain relief.

How is pain categorized?

Pain is categorized in two ways:

  • Acute pain – This type of pain is temporary, resulting from a specific event such as an injury or surgery. It is sudden and usually accompanied by inflammation and loss of mobility.
  • Chronic pain – This type of pain is persistent, incurable, and is often irreversible. It is caused by chronic diseases.

How is one diagnosed with acute or chronic pain?

A doctor must evaluate and diagnose the exact source of a patient's pain. Since there are a variety of underlying issues that can cause pain, it is important to identify the root of the problem before it can be remedied. A number of tests including a physical examination, X-rays or electrodiagnostic testing may be necessary, depending on the type of pain experienced.
